Propeller Maintenance

Pictured below is a cracked blade ferrule on a McCauley Threaded Propeller. If you’ve ever wondered “Why?” the red dyed oil was put inside of these propellers, this is the answer – TO WARN YOU OF A POSSIBLE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE.

In this particular instance, the propeller was really close to having a blade separate from the hub – an event that would have been devastating to the aircraft and pilot. This is a great example as to why you should always have propellers disassembled and inspected during the specified calendar or hour limits that the manufacture(s) suggest.
